Some of my initial thoughts about the album are how Mitski has always produced high quality work that has never failed to make me feel some sort of emotion, so when I found out about this album, I was incredibly excited. While not an artist I keep up to date on, I am always excited when I find out there’s new music to enjoy from her. Like she’s not really my style of music most of the time, I often prefer faster/more energetic music, but her lyricism is often more suited for her slower paced style which I do enjoy. The album length makes a short yet sweet experience to listen to, it’s very easy to listen to this album during a commute or a medium length task.

My favorite song so far has been Where’s My Phone? or Rules. They both are on the more upbeat and energetic side which aligns more closely with my personal taste.

If I had to pick a least favorite song (which for the sake of the review, I do,) I would probably pick Dead Woman. And not because I think it’s bad by any means, but because it confuses me on how I’m supposed to feel, and how it’s trying to make me feel. There’s a tone shift about 2/3s of the way into the song that is fun, as it shifts to a more upbeat or at least more energetic and swift rhythm that is enjoyable, but it feels like two different songs as opposed to one connected one. Charon’s Obol also isn’t my favorite, but I still like it, especially as it reminds me of folk songs, or like songs that would get sung around a camp fire. Folksy music just isn’t super my vibe, hence why I like it but it’s pretty low in my ranking.

Afterthoughts: This album often reminds me of jazz or slam poetry. Like if you put music to slam poetry this album is what I imagine that would sound like. And I mean this in an incredibly positive way too– like that tone and vibe suits this album very well, and sets Nothing’s About to Happen to Me apart from other Mitski releases. While there still are tonal similarities, and same feels when it comes to vibes and emotions, this album feels cohesive both with itself and with the rest of Mitski’s discography.

Rating 1-10: 7.8/10

Again, Mitski is not my usual style of music, but I really enjoyed this album and a lot of the vibes it brought. Mitski always produces amazing, high quality music with very few misses, and I think anyone who is a fan of softer, more indie pop vibes will enjoy this album. Also, the album has a bit more of a jazzy sound I think Laufey fans would enjoy, and jazz fans in general. If you need a good “feel my feelings” album, I definitely would suggest this one. I joke that if you can’t cry to at least a couple songs off a Mitski album, it’s not actually a Mitski album. Critics generally rate the album about the same as I have, maybe a bit higher depending on their scales. And, I quite agree with all the ratings and reviews I’ve seen for this album. This album is beautiful, yet sorrowful, but also sometimes producing feelings of hope or whimsy.

But do I recommend it? Yes. If you like Mitski, or Mitski adjacent, obviously you will love this album. But I also think many jazz, pop and indie fans will enjoy this album as well, with all of the vibes, themes, and emotions that the album goes through and explores. It’s worth giving a listen through at least once, and I highly recommend listening to this album in your car or room while it’s raining outside for ultimate vibes. Or with a nice mixed drink.

Overall I enjoyed this album and I do recommend it! If you have a spare half an hour, or a bit of a longer drive that you just want some more chill vibes for, I totally think you should give this album a listen!
